For the first assignment of my Project Portfolio IV course, I am to set SMART goals for myself to achieve by the end of this month. Below are my goals and how I will go about them.

Goal #1 – Start a blog for the non-profit school, St. Therese Classical Academy

  1. Contact the Headmistress and obtain the account they would like to use for the login

  2. Design a simple blog layout using Wordpress

  3. Curate blog posts from the students of STCA to edit and schedule for posting

This goal will be a charity project for the St. Therese Classical Academy, who have been meaning to start up a blog for a long time now. I can measure the process of this project by setting mini goals for myself each week (week one: create account, week 2: design site, etc…). This goal is achievable because I have made blogs before and I could always use more practice in CMS web design. This goal is relevant because it is helping reiterate the knowledge I learned in previous classes. It also is relevant for the school because they have been meaning to start a blog, but have not had the time within their busy schedule. Finally, since I am not the one writing all the blogs, I will be able to complete it within the 4 weeks of this course.

Goal #2 – Create an inventory list for SF Publishing

  1. Research how to keep track of inventory using PayPal here

  2. Go through, organize, and mark down all merchandise SF Publishing currently has

  3. Transfer the information into PayPal here and decide what needs to be restocked

SF Publishing’s biggest event of the year, BookCon in NYC, is coming up and we need to make sure we have enough items for the event. If we don’t, we need enough time to restock. The way I can measure the progress of this goal is, again, with a weekly checklist. I can start with the research of PayPal here for week 1, and then take inventory of the items over the next two weeks, and then in the fourth week input it all into the program. This goal is achievable because I have taken inventory before at work with a different program, but now I am challenged to learn a new program and do it all myself. This goal is relevant because it will teach me discipline and organizational skills. Finally, as long as I stick to my weekly schedule, I will be able to accomplish it before the course is over.

Goal #3 – Learn the essentials of After Effects with an online Lynda Course

  1. Complete the After Effects CC 2015 Essential Training by Ian Robinson (9 hr)

  2. Practice using the techniques learned by creating short, simple effects

  3. Make a dramatic title effect for a future project using techniques learned

Every portfolio course, I try to learn a new Adobe program. Adobe After Effects has been one on my list for a long time. I learned a few things about it when creating my book trailer months back, but there was so much left to learn. This goal is easily measureable by the progress bar on the Lynda course itself. This goal is achievable as long as I maintain good discipline. It is also relevant because I have many upcoming video projects for SF Publishing and STCA and I want to use After Effects to make them as professional as possible. Finally, as long as I am disciplined, it can be accomplished within the 4 weeks. As long as I watch one hour of the course every day, for nine days, I will have the entire rest of the month to work on the video projects themselves.
