This week I was finishing up my final mix for my audio project.

1. Post Production

We updated our timeline to fit the week.

2. Mixing and Post Editing Basics

Another experimental/reflection assignment.

1. Experiment: Radio Announcer Voice Effect (DIA)

After watching the first YouTube tutorial from LinkedIn, I decided to try enhancing my voice overs with some effects. The first thing I did was raise the volume of my voice overs. For some reason, they were all very quiet yet clear. After doing that, I removed the dead air, breaths, and lip smacks between the phrases in each of my voice overs. Next, I experimented with the “Radio Announcer Voice” preset. In that preset are three effects: Multiband Compressor, Parametric Equalizer, and Hard Limiter. I went into each one and fiddled with the settings a bit until I got the sound that I wanted. The one I messed with the most was the Hard Limiter. I didn’t want my voice to peak too much and go into the red so I adjusted that accordingly. When I was finished, I saved the files as a copy so not to overwrite my original audio files.

2. Experiment: Mastering (MUS)

For my second experiment, I fiddled with the Master effect for my MUS track. The first thing I did was open the Mastering effect. From there, I went to the “Subtle Clarity”. Then, I enabled the Low and High Shelf. After that, I fiddled with the settings as the track was playing. I increased the highs of the song and adjusted the widener to make it sound fuller. Once I was satisfied, I closed out but realized that it was peaking too much. Remembering what I learned from the first video, I opened the hard limiter effect. Within that, I adjusted the sliders so the sound wouldn’t go over into the red. Once I was satisfied, I applied the effects and saved them to separate audio files.

3. What I Learned

From this video, I learned more about the different effects and options within Adobe Audition that can help enhance your recordings. I learned how EQs can affect the frequencies of a recording and make them sound better if used correctly. I also learned the proper names of different tools and parts of audition. Also, I am now more comfortable with the tools to use within the waveform editor and frequency display.

4. New Skills (Learning Objective)

One of the new skills I learned was how to use the effects rack. At first glance, it seems rather confusing but then I understood it to be like a layers’ panel in Photoshop. Each “layer” is meant for a different effect and will not be officially applied to the track unless they are flattened (“apply”). I also learned more about the different effects that could be combined to improve audio such as mastering and limiting. Those, I think, were the ones I have put to use the most. Granted, there are still much I need to learn but I now feel like I have a better grasp on audio mixing and enhancing.

3. Final Mix

Almost at the end of the class, it was time to submit my final mix for grading and feedback. We added the audio to the given video, provided various audio files, and production forms.

Summary:

For this assignment, I think the biggest issue was making sure the volume of each of the tracks were just right. I had made all the necessary adjustments and tweaks to the individual tracks, but I wanted to make sure that together they all sounded their best. After listening to it over and over, I was still indecisive. So, I had some of my family members listen to it and offer feedback. Going off of that, I believe I was able to get an evenly balanced mix.
