The first assignment of Week 2 was to create an experimental video from our B-Roll footage in the likeness of Maya Deren, an experimental cinema creator from the 1940s. Frankly, I was a little confused creating this video but I did my best with what I had. I also was able to give a little background to the story to help it to make a bit more sense.
After watching the films by Maya Deren, I was already getting an idea for my clip. I took note of the jump cuts, the periods of silence, the stop motion, point of view, and other techniques used in her videos. Even though I was limited with my time and could only use my previous content, I was still able to create a short, intriguing story: a teen reflects on the friends she lost to drug abuse and is conflicted as to what she is going to do about it.
In the video, I mostly used the natural sound of the video that was enhanced in a way to set the mood of the clips. I also included sound bytes from the "Sound Check" assignment. Finally, I used two filters (monochromatic and noise) to give it the black and white, grainy feel of the old films.
