Gillettian Square

For this exploration activity, we were to make a Gillettian Square (similar concept to the Punett Square) about the crosses between Storytelling Entertainment, Marketing, Cross Media, and Transmedia and write an explanation for each element.

  • Maze Runner The Maze Runner is Cross Media, Storytelling Entertainment because it was first a book that became a movie. The plot, characters, and setting remain the same throughout both versions of the story and nothing new or unsurprising has been added.

  • Star Wars Star Wars is one of the most popular Transmedia, Storytelling Entertainment campaigns out there. To go along with the ever popular movies, Star Wars also has video games, comics, apps, cartoons, and more that are branches of the main story. Similar to the Matrix, the Star Wars movies only give you a glimpse of the whole picture.

  • Yours, Mine, and Ours This movie is considered Cross Media, Marketing because it uses cross collaboration. In the movie, the band Hawk Nelson makes an appearance playing one of their songs at a house party. By doing this, they hoped that the audience of Yours, Mine, and Ours would go check out Hawk Nelson because of their appearance and vice versa.

  • Goldfish Crackers Goldfish Crackers is the perfect example of Transmedia, Marketing because of its interactive campaign. First, their commercials don’t just talk about the product. Many of them are actually pieces to a larger story, such as their “Search for Gilbert” sequence from 2009-2011 (Ozler, 2009). Not only do they have their short story commercials, they also have a gaming app and website that are branches of the story.
